Great art begets great art.

In Hidden Figures, Taraji P. Henson plays Katherine Johnson, a physicist and mathematician who, along with Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe), helped the United States land on the moon. Their untold story is inspiring young artists, and a collection of their diverse, moving portraits of the characters is available exclusively on Mashable.

“This film and the story on which it’s based, is so enticing because women of color are being portrayed as equals, if not greater, with their white male colleagues and supervisors,” said Jamila Silvera, one of the featured artists. “It’s also super intriguing to see this kind of story released during such an exposed time in the U.S. I think all humans with eyes and ears (and appropriate age-ratings) should experience it as it might have a little lesson for us all.” Read more…

Simply displaying your deceased loved one’s ashes in an urn on your mantle is so last year.

Justin Crowe of Chronicle Cremation Designs offers something much more unique that you can do with the ashes of a loved one. The business turns remains into “ceramic design objects” for your home.

That’s right – you can enjoy your morning cup of joe from a mug made of grandma, or rock a ceramic necklace made from your BFF.

Crowe was inspired to start this venture when his grandpa passed away.

“Being with my grandfather when he died in his home had a profound impact on my outlook. Home is a place that is routine, average and familiar, and experiencing such a huge emotional event in that environment helped normalize his passing for me,” Crowe wrote to Mashable. “Based on this experience, I began to search for a way to give others the ability to remember passed loved ones in daily life.”  Read more…

While many were focused on Black Friday deals on electronics, one of Apple’s biggest partners, Hermés, released a special holiday treat: a new Apple Watch band.

The new band, called the Equateur tatouage, joins the brand’s Single Tour line of Apple Watch bands and is offered in 38mm ($410) and 42mm ($340) sizes.

The mostly black and white band is covered in a jungle foliage design and features a dash of color in the form of a stalking leopard. The design, which is the first Apple Watch band from Hermés offering graphics instead of a solid color, is printed on calfskin.  Read more…
