Evil Geniuses knock Wings Gaming out of ‘Dota 2’ Boston Major

The first Dota 2 Major of the season started with an upset.

In the first round, 2016 Dota 2 International winners Wings Gaming were knocked out by Evil Geniuses.

The Dota 2 Boston Major main event kicked off Wednesday with the first half of the round-of-16 matches.

Wings Gaming fell to Evil Geniuses in the second match of the day. Normally this would send Wings Gaming to the losers bracket, but this Major is the first to use a single-elimination format.

Evil Geniuses outplayed Wings Gaming in both matches, moving on to Friday’s quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory. Read more…

Flying an X-Wing in virtual reality is absurdly cool

Is the Rogue One-inspired X-Wing mission in Star Wars: Battlefront the best reason to own a PlayStation VR right now?

Yes. Yes it is.

The free virtual reality minigame feels like a dumbed down version of the classic PC game X-Wing, reborn. You hop into the iconic rebel fighter’s cockpit, blast a few TIE Fighters into oblivion and run circles around an Imperial Star Destroyer.

Oh yeah, you also get to watch the stars melt away right in front of you as your attack fighter leaps into hyperspace. OMG.

The Battlefront virtual reality mission is the best kind of fan service. Criterion Games, the studio that built it, had the right idea. Before the mission even starts, you’re deposited in an empty space with a parked X-Wing in front of you. Read more…

‘Rocket League’ has a new space arena and more customizations

The only thing better than playing soccer with rocket-powered cars is doing it in outer space.

Rocket League‘s Wednesday update, dubbed Starbase ARC, introduces a handful of cool new features: a free space-themed arena, a DLC space-themed car, new items (both holiday-themed and not), arena preferences for matchmaking, a custom level uploader, customizable training, some redesigns for older content and color blind accessibility.

That’s a lot of stuff, so let’s break it down.

Starbase ARC arena and car

The Starbase ARC arena isn’t just an awesome looking arena, it’s a completely new kind of map entering the competitive and casual playlists. The arena is octagonal instead of rectangular — just like the octagon map from the Rocket Labs playlist — so the field won’t be exactly what most players are used to.  Read more…

10 painfully awkward moments we wish we could Warp Strike away from

The world is chock full of intra-gaming situations when we wish we could apply the magic of FINAL FANTASY XV to resolve the objects of our daily awkwardness. Who hasn’t, for instance, wanted to vanish from a sticky situation at some point in their lives?

While that may not be strictly possible — given the pesky laws of physics — it never hurt a gamer to dream. Just imagine being able to Warp Strike out of these encounters with your dignity intact.

When you realize you should’ve swiped left

The moment your mobile dating app hooked you up with this gem, who can’t stop talking about his collection of WWII-era typewriters, you know it’s time to bail. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could Warp Strike to the door, instead of faking a dinner date choking episode like you’re about to do?   Read more…

‘Final Fantasy XV’ updates take a page from ‘Destiny,’ and that’s great

It’s hard to say anyone saw this coming for Final Fantasy XV.

While the long-in-development game is a hit, there are plenty of things to criticize about it. And Square Enix has some aggressive plans for addressing the concerns raised by fans and in reviews.

“We have been listening to your ideas on how to make the game experience even better, and so in addition to the previously announced content, we’ll be providing free updates to the game throughout the coming year,” game director Hajime Tabata wrote in a new blog post

What’s noteworthy is the nature of these changes. While some fall under the umbrella of standard game rebalancing — like making a particular weapon feel more powerful — others have the potential to switch up the flow of the game. Read more…

The ‘Overwatch’ winter event kicks off on Dec. 13 (probably)

Here’s hoping one of Reaper’s holiday-themed voice lines is “Ho! Ho! Ho!”

Overwatch will seemingly kick off its first (and hopefully annual) winter/holiday event on Tuesday, Dec. 13. There aren’t any details to share yet, but a tweet from the game’s official account seems pretty clear.

The tweet is just cryptic enough to leave an element of uncertainty hanging — does the event start on Dec. 13 or is it just an announcement? We’d bet on the former.

Tuesday is the day that Overwatch weekly updates launch. What’s more, multi-week Overwatch events for the 2016 Olympics and Halloween occurred earlier in the year, so there’s precedent. Blizzard likes to extend real world celebrations into its hit game. Read more…
