The only thing better than playing soccer with rocket-powered cars is doing it in outer space.

Rocket League‘s Wednesday update, dubbed Starbase ARC, introduces a handful of cool new features: a free space-themed arena, a DLC space-themed car, new items (both holiday-themed and not), arena preferences for matchmaking, a custom level uploader, customizable training, some redesigns for older content and color blind accessibility.

That’s a lot of stuff, so let’s break it down.

Starbase ARC arena and car

The Starbase ARC arena isn’t just an awesome looking arena, it’s a completely new kind of map entering the competitive and casual playlists. The arena is octagonal instead of rectangular — just like the octagon map from the Rocket Labs playlist — so the field won’t be exactly what most players are used to.  Read more…

LONDON — We’ve heard of beard baubles, glitter beards and even jingle bell-adorned beards.

Now a new trend has hit the beard scene and it’s about to light up this festive season in a big — and very literal — way.

Twinkling fairy lights are the latest addition to the ever-burgeoning list of ways to bedazzle one’s beard this Yuletide.

One pop-up is bringing the twinkly lights to bearded Londoners, with one-off beard decorating sessions and stylist consultations.

‘Tis the season to make decorative choices based on corny puns about celebrities.

Wreath Witherspoons, though perfect, have gone a little commercial since Mindy Kaling brought the phrase into our holiday vernacular back in 2014 and Reese herself cashed in on the pun. But 2016 is the year to DIY a Chrissy Treigen.

Being #ForeverAlone can be even harder around the holidays – couples are constantly kissing under mistletoe, holding hands while ice skating, and worst of all, sharing their romantic holiday cards all over the internet.

So, John Olmstead, 22, from Mattoon, Illinois, decided to poke fun at a certain holiday card trope in a pretty genius way.

Firstly, here’s the thumbnail of Olmstead’s photo, which seems to be a partial shot of a man and a woman in a casual embrace in front of Christmas presents.

Then, we zoom out to the surprising full shot. Read more…

The holidays in Australia is scorching hot. Instead of eggnog and mulled wine, Australians are usually punching cans of cold beer.

It’s no wonder why Wes Boyd from Perth has built a giant Christmas tree made of 2536 cans of Victoria Bitter or VB.

Measuring 4.4 metres (14.4 feet) high, it’s less a tree and more an almighty tribute to the beverage.

“I wanted to build it to make people happy,” Boyd told PerthNow

“Me and some mates love drinking VBs, and two to three mates have been bringing empty cans over here every week for the past 14 months.” Read more…

Have you heard the news about the election?

It was a real upset, especially because polls reflected an outcome which was not the one that ended up happening.

For some, placing trust in the polls was the only way they survived the weeks prior to the election. However, this resulted in a lot of anger following the results. Namely a lot of anger at Nate Silver, the man behind the site FiveThirtyEight

And if one of the people angry at Nate Silver happens to be on your holiday shopping list, then here are some ideas for what to buy them. Read more…

LOS ANGELES —  Home Alone and the holidays.

Those are two of digital star Liza Koshy’s favorite things. She even purchased the “Merry Christmas Ya Filthy Animal” sweater back in June, in anticipation of December.

So when YouTube approached her with an idea for a holiday special, it was an obvious yes.

“I freaking love the holidays,” the 20-year-old YouTuber, who first rose to fame on Vine, told Mashable in a recent Facebook Live interview. “I’ve been psyched for them. It’s my favorite time of year. This one was super easy to agree to. It gave me the opportunity to do longer content. It’s a 35-minute special. Everything I come up with myself has been seven minutes and below. Shorter form … I was super excited to create something longer and see if I could even do it.” Read more…

The demise of this Swedish Christmas goat has come early

LONDON — Alas, even Sweden isn’t safe from the wrath of 2016.

In our continued coverage of extended metaphors for this tumultuous year, here’s a holiday-themed analogy of well-intentioned calamity.

The tale starts out quaintly enough. In the Swedish town of Gävle, there is a lovely holiday tradition of erecting a charming goat effigy.

The structure, complete with red ribbons and twinkling lights, is built in tribute to the Scandinavian Yule Goat, a time-honored symbol of the season.

The town gathers around the structure to greet the goat on the first day of Advent. According to the BBC, this year (for the goat’s 50th anniversary) around 2.3m kronor (£200,000; $250,000) was spent on its construction and the associated festivities.  Read more…
