Johnny Depp is Hollywood’s most overpaid actor according to ‘Forbes’

For the second year in a row, Johnny Depp’s films can barely justify his paycheck. We know that famous actors can make tens of millions of dollars for their work, but the understanding of those who pay them is that the movies will earn it back — in a big way.

That wasn’t the case for Depp, the year’s most overpaid actor according to Forbes; Depp’s films made $2.80 for every dollar he was paid. He and other big-name stars had films’ fates riding on their bankability and didn’t always deliver to the extent producers wanted, though, to be fair, Depp’s movies are bringing in more than he makes.  Read more…

Can love survive the ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ trailer? Can any of us?

If the first 30 seconds of the Fifty Shades Darker suggest that this isn’t going to be a crazy kooky sex movie — surprise! Anastasia Steele is back with Christian Gray and everything is creepy Beyoncé covers and everything hurts.

Fifty Shades of Grey ended with the couple splitting, probably because they spent too much time sitting at tables negotiating sex contracts. Anastasia displays a distinctly not-steely resolve in Darker by agreeing to go to dinner with her ex (“Because I’m…hungry”) and ends up sliding off her panties under the table (Did they even get food??). CLASSIC. Read more…

The marketing wheels are turning ahead of the premiere of one of China’s biggest budget movies ever, The Great Wall.

The $150 million epic, directed by one of China’s most famous directors, Zhang Yimou, has promised movie monsters, a historical backdrop and huge explosions.

Oh, and Matt Damon’s starring in it.

But in having to face the press this week to promote the movie, Damon inevitably had to respond to one of the biggest complaints about the movie so far — that the main role should’ve gone to an Asian person.

He reportedly said that stories labelling the movie as “whitewashed” were “outrageous,” and that his role as a mercenary going to China to steal gunpowder had always been intended as European. Read more…

Nothing launched Australia onto the world stage quite like 1986 film Crocodile Dundee.

The star of it all, Paul Hogan, has finally been recognised for his contribution to the local film industry by receiving the Longford Lyell Award from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA).

But Hogan himself doesn’t think he really deserves it.

Discussing the award with reporters on Tuesday, Hogan said the honour, presented by AACTA president and fellow actor Geoffrey Rush, was “mystifying” according to AAP. Read more…

When movie buffs put their useless knowledge to good use …

Clark Zhu, an editor from California, edited together short clips from roughly 262 films that were released this year to make an epic, eight-minute, five-part trailer.

Most of it is underscored by classic, dramatic music. You know the songs I’m talking about – the ones that make you feel all the feels every time you watch a movie trailer.

And if you’re in the mood to nerd out and know which movie each short clip is from, Zhu has an uber-detailed shot-by-shot list here.

The Lego vs. Barbie debate is as old and divisive as Backstreet vs. N*Sync, and now both toys will have feature films to fight with: Sony is developing a live-action Barbie comedy, and is in talks with Amy Schumer to portray the toy heroine, Mashable has confirmed.

Though no deals have been signed, Schumer and two other prominent female artists are in early talks with the studio for the film written by Hillary Winton. Schumer and her sister will likely be involved in the writing process as well.

In the film, Barbie gets kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough, and ends up on a live-action adventure in our world, similar to Disney’s Enchanted in 2007. The project emerged from a deal between Sony and Mattel which began over two years ago. Read more…
