Periscope Introduces Virtual Currency Allowing Broadcasters to Earn Revenue

Twitter-owned live video streaming platform Periscope received an update on Wednesday that introduces a new feature enabling broadcasters to earn revenue for the first time.

Since Periscope's inception, viewers have embraced the "like" or "heart" function as a way to show their appreciation for broadcasts while they're streaming, but until now there's been no means for users to reward broadcasters monetarily.


However, as of this week, viewers can now purchase "Super Hearts" and reward live broadcasters, who can then cash out the value of the virtual goods at the end of each month. The hearts are similar to "cheering", the paid reward in rival Amazon broadcast platform Twitch.

Any user of Periscope can buy and send Super Hearts during live streams, but not for replays. Hearts are purchased within the app using newly introduced virtual currency, Periscope Coins, which range in price from 99 cents for 1,050 to 132,650 for $100.

Super Hearts come in three types with increasing price, in order to enable viewers to reward broadcasters with larger amounts in one go and appear higher up in the live chat stream. Broadcasters who gain Super Hearts will see them as stars in their profile, and to cash them out they have to enroll in Periscope's new "Super Broadcasters" program, which requires filling out an application and tax form.

Periscope Rolls Out 360-Degree Video Broadcasting to iOS Users

Live video broadcasting service Periscope on Friday announced full support for 360-degree broadcasting from its iOS app, following testing with a small number of users.

The change means that iPhone users with compatible 360-degree camera equipment, such as the new Samsung Gear 360, can broadcast immersive video feeds of their entire surrounding environment.
As a broadcaster, 360 video allows you to spend less time and energy on framing your shot so you can focus on adding new dimension to your viewers' experience. In 360 broadcasts, viewers will be able to look anywhere while also having the broadcaster present to anchor the broadcast.
If a Periscope broadcast is marked with a "Live 360" badge, viewers can change the point of view by moving their phone or tapping and scrolling around the screen.

Twitter’s Periscope Now Supports 360-Degree Live Videos

Twitter's video streaming service Periscope was today updated with support for live 360-degree video, allowing broadcasters to share a more immersive video streaming experience with their fans on Periscope and Twitter.

Live 360 videos are denoted by a special badge and when viewed, users can tilt, rotate, or tap on their devices to see additional angles of an uploaded video. 360 video works on iOS devices and some desktop browsers, but Safari is not supported. An example Periscope video is below:

With 360 video on Periscope, you can experience moments with the broadcaster and take a look around -- it's one step closer to actually being there. Starting today, you'll be able to join live 360 videos on Periscope and Twitter from some incredible broadcasters -- getting front-row access at exclusive events, traveling to places across the globe, and getting up close with well-known personalities.
According to Twitter, the feature is limited to a "small group" of "well-known personalities" who will be broadcasting using the new feature. 360 broadcasts will be rolled out to additional users "during the coming weeks," and Periscope users can apply to test the feature through the Periscope website.

Twitter for iOS Integrates Live Video Functionality Powered by Periscope

Twitter today will begin rolling out a new update for its iOS and Android apps centered around the introduction of a full-featured live video client within the social networking app (via The Verge). The live video functionality is "powered by Periscope," but doesn't require users to have downloaded that app separately.

The new update is an expansion of the "Go Live" Periscope button Twitter introduced to a small group of users over the summer, but is now more deeply integrated into Twitter. For example, new broadcasts will appear on followers' timelines, and users will be able to tap to join, and then send comments and hearts. To initiate a broadcast, users must navigate to compose a tweet, tap the camera icon, tap the Periscope "Live" button, and begin the live video.

Periscope was bought by Twitter in early 2015, and the former app had a well-publicized debut year, ending up as Apple's App of the Year in the Best of 2015 charts last December. The service has slowly tapered off in popularity ever since, leading to Twitter's slow integration of Periscope into the main Twitter app this year. Still, Periscope told The Verge that the dedicated live-streaming app will continue to exist and be updated.
Periscope says the app will continue to be developed. “We are fully invested in the Periscope app,” said Sara Haider, senior engineering manager at Periscope. She noted that not all Periscope users regularly use Twitter.
Twitter's hopes for live streaming have expanded beyond mobile as well, with the company introducing a live video-focused Apple TV app this past September.


Facebook began heavily integrating live video into its mobile app in 2016 as well, and even launched a specific marketing campaign aimed at promoting it. In related live video news, Instagram just this week expanded live video to all U.S. users, YouTube for iOS added the feature, the creators of the now-dead Vine app announced a live-streaming app, and an all-new service called "Live.ly" breached the top of the Top Free iPhone Apps chart this summer.
